The Quest for the Perfect Skincare Product, Part 1

I have a love/hate relationship with my skin. More specifically, the skin on my face. Either it's perfect and flawless, or its a lamentable mess. Which leads me to my question du jour: What are the best products for my skin?

Actually it's several questions:

What is the best foundation for oily skin?
What is the best cleanser?
What is the best moisturizer?
Should I be using toner or not?
What about anti-aging? Is there a product out there that is oil-free, but still fights the signs of aging that, unfortunately, I am already seeing in the mirror? (Hello frown lines.)

I think that taking care of your face is the most important money you'll ever spend on yourself. It's the only face you have and you should baby it.

Any skin gurus out there? Help a sister out. I would like to sample several products, then tell you how it goes here at Musings. Suggestions are SUPER. Email me at musingsbynayblog@gmail.com,  or hit me up on facebook if you know it.

Non-comedigenically yours,
Nay

Stickers Are the New Wallpaper

A friend of mine showed me this link about door stickers! Now before you go "oh man Nay, we're not kids anymore, who puts stickers on their doors?!", you have to check these out:

Pretty amazing, huh. You can't even tell that it's a door! These stickers are available here for $199 (a little steep, but imagine the visual impact!) and are very easy to install- they go on with simple wallpaper glue! Check out the blog at the link given.

Handmade Jewelry? Yes Please!

Part of my Reinvention and Restoration Project (that's what I'm calling my diet, exercise and wardrobe updates) involves getting acquainted with jewelry. Step One was branching out of simple stone studs and into more decorative options, see my July 13th post. I'm proud to report that I am happily wearing lovely post earrings and am ready to begin experimenting with dangly earrings.

One of my friends, Shelby, makes jewelry and she gave me a beautiful set for a graduation gift: a pair of cobalt/azure blue drops and a small circlet necklace of the same stones. I'm very excited to wear them, but I've been avoiding necklaces and drop earrings this summer because of my summer school work, and the kid I'm working with (he pulls hair and tends to grab-ass a lot. Last thing I need is him to pull and earring out of my ear.) However, with summer school over this week, I'm anxious to wear my new baubles!

One of my sisters friends from college, Elizabeth, makes jewelry also. She writes an eco-friendly, jewlery blog called The Diving Loon, and sells her creations on Etsy.com here. I was perusing her site this morning and this is what I found:

Wine Lily Floral Copper drops
The Diving Loon, etsy.com
$15.00

I know it is a sin to covet something, but my god I want those earrings.

These too:

Diving for Pearl Cluster earrings
The Diving Loon, etsy.com
$16.00

Pearl and Floral Chandelier earrings
The Diving Loon, etsy.com
$14.00

Be sure to check out Elizabeth's blog and her Etsy.com site. All of her jewlery is 100% guaranteed, and customizable. Enjoy!

Bejewledly yours,
Nay

Nay and the Great Outdoors: A Wild and Wonderful Camping Adventure

I am not an outdoorsy girl.

I do not like bugs, spiders, the way grass makes me itch, dirty feet, sweating like a whore in church, getting bitten by mosquitos, and various other outdoors things.

I do, however, enjoy camping. I know, totally oxymoronic, isn't it. But I like to camp.

Let me rephrase- I like camping MY way. Which is to say that it doesn't look very much like "camping" at all. Oh sure, I've got the tent and the campfire. But I've also got an air mattress, portable DVD player, shampoo and conditioner, multiple changes of clothes, and several coolers of chocolate and sodas. I also have a set of clean sheets, a warm blanket, bath wipes, clorox wipes, Purel, body wash, various magazines, and a bag full of bug spray and sunblock. I do not "rough it" like most campers do. I make sure my creature comforts are close at hand. Like toilet paper.

I went camping this weekend for my best friend Lisa's 25th birthday. It's a tradition on her birthday that we camp. I used to dread the idea of camping, but I really do love it. We decided to camp on the north fork of the Shenandoah River in Shenandoah County, VA. Our site was in a roped-off area of a cow field with river access. It was an idyllic spot. The neighbors were sort of noisy in the morning, but I forgive them.

View from my tent window in the AM. Noisy neighbors.

Ok, ok, so we don't really do the whole "outdoors-camping-roughin'-it" thing. But we do have fun, and we are outside in the elements. I'm not a total priss pot (I'm rather girly), but I enjoy camping because it's a time to just be loose and free and not have to worry about how crappy my hair looks or that I'm not wearing any makeup, because EVERYONE looks crappy and dirty!

I'm not really sure where I'm going with this post, but I thought I'd share my experiences in the Great Outdoors. Maybe one day I'll work up enough courage to camp the "real" way...

...Without my portable DVD player. Perish the thought.

Campily yours,
Nay

Real Girls Wear Pearls, or, My Adventures in Jewelry

I don't know much about jewelry. Ask me anything you want about shoes, bags, and general apparel and I'll tell you all I know. And don't get me wrong, I love jewels, and diamonds are a girl's best friend, but when it comes to jewelry for myself, I've never "got it". I wear the same two rings, silver bracelet and watch everyday.

But lately I've been branching out, and instead of the same old diamond studs I've been wearing for years, I've started wearing more artistic studs instead. Target has been my friend- they have these great deals on post earrings. While I couldn't find them on the website, here are photos of my new earrings. Let me know what you think.

My next step is dangly earrings. But I'm not quite ready for those yet. I'll need more help from my sister for that.

Clockwise from top:
Diamond-shaped posts, $2.99
Rose bubble flower cluster, $3.99
Black cameo, $3.99
Enamel sunburst, white, $2.99

All from Target, and most were on sale. I love a good deal.

Any suggestions for where to find cute, inexpensive (under $10) posts?

Advice needed for dangly earrings, so please comment!!

Bejeweledly yours,
Nay

Fighting Cabin Fever

I don't know about you, but I'm sick of being cooped up in my house. Summertime in Virginia is UNBEARABLE, and the past few weeks have seen temperatures in the triple digits. So, to beat the heat, I've stayed inside where it's cool and comfortable.

And now I'm sick of looking at everything in my house.

How about you? Tired of that same-old, ho-hum living room arrangement? Me too. So here are some tips to help spruce up the place.

1. Grouping furnishings closer together creates a more intimate atmosphere. It's hard to do that though- I've been programmed that furniture should frame the room and hug the walls. But to make a space feel more cozy and homey, group furniture together to create "chat spaces", conversation- friendly arrangements. Just do yourself a favor- Don't put a rug in the middle of your chat space. It makes the coziness feel more like crampiness.

2. Have one of those classic, goes-with-everything beige microfiber couches? You and everyone else. Make yours pack more punch with punchy, pizzazzy pillows! (how's that for alliteration?) Throw pillows are a cheap and beautiful way to add some color to a plain jane sofa. Couch not beige? No problem- there are decorative, bright pillows to suit any color scheme! Try Target, Pier 1 or your favorite boutique!

3. Let's face it. We love our electronic gadgets. But let's also face it. They are UGLY. Hide them away in a media cabinet! Where to find one? ANYWHERE because ANYTHING with doors can be a media cabinet. Got an old china hutch that's seen better days? Remove the glass panels, insert a pretty fabric covered piece of luan and voila. Instant media cabinet. Prefer the premade ones? Any furniture store worth its salt will have one. They come in a variety of colors, and can be attached to desks, or flying solo. My favorites are the ones you find at consignment shops or antique places that can be refurbished (I do love a do-it-yourself project.)

4. Most of us 20-somethings do not own brand new furniture. We've got the hand-me-downs from our parents/grandparents/great Uncle Lou. And while we're grateful for the free furniture, and that couch really is comfy, sometimes the upholstery is not so pretty. Simple solution: slip cover. Obviously. But do yourself a favor and go with a white slip cover. I know what you're thinking; "WHITE? Has she lost her red-wine-loving mind?" No I haven't. White is easier to keep clean than colors because white can be bleached and colors cannot. Colored slipcovers fade after washing. White doesn't get any whiter. Trust me. Get some Scotchguard just in case, but trust me on this. Oh, and see tip # 2 for ways to punch up white.

5. Again with the hand-me-down furniture. This time, it's side tables. Hate the tired wood? Got lots of dings and scratches? Simple fix. Spray paint. Fill in any nicks or dings with wood putty, then spray paint the entire table in a fun color you love. And remember, if you hate it, paint over it. It's just paint.

6. Got a dining room? Me too, and that hideous thing hanging over the table, that sorry excuse for chandelier lighting has GOT to go. New light fixtures can be a great way to spruce up a room because sometimes that's all a room needs is new lighting. While fixtures can be pricey, consider it an investment in your own well-being, and you'll be glad you did.

7. Speaking of dining rooms- do you have one of those two-tone stain and paint dining room table and chairs? They make the room look choppy and thrown together. Instead, paint the whole thing to match the color of your cabinetry or storage pieces. Like if you have white cabinets and shelving, paint your table and chairs white. If you have darker wood, paint the table and chairs black. Or go really crazy and paint the whole thing a great shade of red! Having the table and chairs be one solid color makes the room look more finished and put together. And less like a bachelorette pad.

I could go on and on, but it's time to go. Hope these tips help! For more great ideas, go to Real Simple and check out their makeover tips.

Decoratively yours,
Nay
